How to Overlay a Transparent PNG on a Photo

Photo Collage Pro Team · Published

Place a transparent PNG logo or cutout on a photo. Learn how the base image sets output size, arrange layers, preserve proportions, and avoid white boxes.

A transparent PNG can place a logo, sticker, or prepared cutout over a photograph without a rectangular background hiding the picture underneath. The PNG must already contain transparency: saving an ordinary white-background image with a .png extension does not remove that background.

The overlay images tool uses one base image and up to 20 additional image layers. It is suited to arranging prepared assets. It does not automatically remove a background, and it does not provide an editable layered project as the downloaded result.

Start with the right base image

The base photo determines the canvas shape and original-pixel export dimensions. A 1600×1200 base creates a 1600×1200 result; adding a larger logo does not increase that canvas size. Choose a base with enough resolution for where the final image will be used.

Use an image you own or have permission to modify, and use logos or artwork you are authorized to place on it. Keep an untouched copy of each source so you can rebuild or revise the composition later.

Add and position the PNG

  1. Open the overlay tool and select the base photo.
  2. Add your transparent PNG as a new image layer. Check that the base is visible around the actual logo or cutout.
  3. Drag the layer into place and use a corner handle to resize it proportionally. Avoid enlarging a small graphic far beyond its source size.
  4. Use quick positioning for a starting point, then make small adjustments. The keyboard controls can help when dragging is too coarse.
  5. Move layers forward or backward until overlaps look correct, then export PNG or JPG.

For a product photo, place a small logo in quiet background space rather than across a key feature. Leave a visible margin from the edge so the composition still feels intentional if a destination displays a slightly cropped preview.

Understand layer order and cropping

An upper layer covers lower layers wherever it has visible pixels. If a logo disappears, check whether another image sits above it before adding it again. Duplicate layers make later adjustments harder to reason about.

Cropping a layer changes which part of that source is shown; it does not remove a white background around an object. Use the non-destructive crop controls to remove unused edges, and reposition the layer after cropping if its visible balance has changed.

Troubleshoot white boxes and blurry logos

A white rectangle usually means the source image includes white pixels around the artwork. Obtain a genuinely transparent version or prepare the cutout separately. The checkerboard pattern in some preview images can also be baked into the file; it is not proof of transparency.

If the logo looks soft, reduce its displayed size or obtain a higher-resolution original. The output preserves the base image's dimensions, but it cannot invent detail in an enlarged overlay. Inspect the saved file at 100% zoom as well as at its intended viewing size.

Pick the download format

PNG is useful when the composition contains hard-edged graphics or text because it avoids JPEG compression artifacts. JPG is often more compact for a photographic result, but it has no alpha transparency. A full opaque base photo already fills the canvas, so PNG does not make that photo's background disappear.

The downloaded image is a flattened composition. Keep your original assets if you expect to change the logo position later, and download your result before leaving the page.

If you want several photographs to occupy equally sized frames instead of overlapping freely, follow the nine-photo collage guide. If you need images connected end to end, use the photo stitcher.
